George, Charlotte and Louis ‘Clap For Our Carers’ Again (Updated Dress ID, More)

We were delighted by a new video this evening showing the entire Cambridge family taking part in the weekly Clap For Our Carers event.

“This evening The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis joined the UK in the weekly #ClapForOurCarers to show their appreciation for the incredible key workers working tirelessly to keep the country running,” Kensington Palace wrote on Instagram.

It was shown as part of a skit from the BBC’s Big Night In, a fundraiser with proceeds going to “causes that support vulnerable people around the UK whose lives have been affected by the coronavirus pandemic.” The skit focused on a spoofed Zoom call between Prince William and British actor/comedian Stephen Fry.

Now for our look at what everyone is wearing beginning with Prince George who sported classic basics, a checked shirt and chinos. The shirt is a classic gingham print in royal blue and the trousers look like navy blue. On the left, the Boys Chino Trousers ($42) as offered at Boden. On the right, the Chinos in Dark Blue ($7.99) as carried at H&M.

I doubt it is either pair shown above (the zipper looks too long on the Boden pair, and the H&M waistband doesn’t look deep enough), these are more just to share examples of the sort of trousers I think George is wearing. Trotters stocks a pair but the button looked off, and I have struck out at other retailers where the Duchess shops for the children. It could be almost any pair, many retailers carry basics like what George has on. I will take a longer look for the shirt tomorrow, that is something we should be able to identify.

If looking for shirt replicas here are a few options, from left to right: the Lands’ End Boys’ Button-Down Poplin Shirt ($14.97); Old Navy’s Classic Shirt for Boys ($15); on the right, Gap’s Gingham Poplin Shirt ($12).

Princess Charlotte was in a full dress with a round collar, sash/bow that ties in the back, smocking at the waist with a gathered, full skirt that is somewhat longer than what we have seen the Princess wearing of late. I think the piece also has flutter sleeves although in some shots they almost look like a raglan style.

UPDATE APR 24: One company making similar pieces to Charlotte’s dress is London-based Question Everything, classic designs with hand-smocked detailing. Below, three Question Everything styles, all with smocking at the waist, a round neckline, and flutter-type sleeves. All three also have a sash that ties in back like Charlotte’s dress. On the left, you see the Willow dress, in the center, the Tuscany style, and on the right, the Gianna.

I have contacted the company on the chance that perhaps they made the Princess’s dress. UPDATE 1: I have heard back from Question Everything and they tell me Charlotte was not wearing one of their dresses.

In a comment, CVB suggested Malvi & Co as a possible designer of the dress.  The company’s clothes are handmade in Italy, the majority made with natural fibers like cotton, linen, and wool. There were several styles I found that have design elements seen in Charlotte’s dress. Below left and center are two Malvi dresses, both showing smocking at the waist, round necklines and full skirt; the center dress has flutter sleeves. On the right, another Question Everything design. I have also contacted Malvi to see if they might have made the dress.  

Again, none of these are being suggested as “the” dress won by Princess Charlotte, merely companies making similar garments.

UPDATE 2: I have heard back from Malvi and they say it looks like the Princess was wearing their dress. They tell me the fabric is the ‘sky blue’ print shown above left and the dress is from their last collection. Below, an image of the piece, the ‘sky blue printed dress with smock and flowers with short sleeves‘ (€64.42, about $70). The print is the same as the dress shown above left and the skirt below, Malvi tells me the lighting just a little different in the different photos.

Moving to Prince Louis, I believe he was wearing the Hampton Canvas Nantucket Shoes ($28) shoes we have seen Prince George wear.

In watching the video you can see something red on the front of Prince Louis’s sweater. It is just visible in this screengrab from the BBC via The Express.

Christine Effie thinks the Prince wore the Crochet Car Sweater with Peter Pan Collar (£9, roughly $11) from Sainsbury’s Tu line and I think she is right.

The piece is 100% cotton with the red crocheted car decor on the front, and a contrasting cream collar.  Our thanks to Christine for her ID of the sweater on Twitter.

The shorts Louis is wearing could be one of the pairs we have seen George in before or something entirely new. Without better photos, it is impossible to know for sure.
