What a nice Saturday surprise: new photos of Prince Louis, including one with Princess Charlotte!
The pictures were taken by the Duchess and released this weekend. Kensington Palace says the photo you see above was taken on April 26th at Kensington Palace.
In the second photo, we see Charlotte holding Prince Louis and giving him a kiss on the head. Kensington Palace says this picture was taken on Charlotte’s birthday, May 2nd.
The Palace shared a statement from Kate and William:
The Duke and Duchess would like to thank members of the public for their kind messages following the birth of Prince Louis, and for Princess Charlotte’s third birthday.
The picture with Charlotte reminded me right away of another photo, one taken in June of 2015.
Now to what the children were wearing. If Charlotte’s sweater looks familiar, it’s because we have seen it before. Many of you will remember the piece, seen below on Prince George in the Queen’s 90th Birthday portrait taken by Annie Leibovitz.
We haven’t yet identified the top Charlotte is wearing beneath the sweater. It looks like she could be in a denim or corduroy skirt and a pair of tights, the latter probably by Amaia Kids, perhaps this navy.
Prince Louis is in an outfit that appears to be similar, if not identical, to that worn by Charlotte in the June 2015 pictures.
It was a set by Irulea, now called the Princess Charlotte set. Both sweaters appear to have the double row of detail at the chest, and the ribbing at the neckline looks the same. It is tough to tell if the chemise/top beneath the sweater is the piece worn by Charlotte, but it looks that way from the one photo we have.
Not seen in the montage above, the knit leggings both children wore; the stitch used looks the same in both photos as well. The leggings are not part of the Irulea set. They might be the Thick Knit Baby Leggings by M & H Baby; in the image below you can see the detail of ribbing at the ankle. We know the children have worn pieces from the brand, so it would make sense to see them in leggings by the company.
Louis is in a different sweater for his picture with Charlotte; we do not know the origins of the sweater he is wearing in the picture with Charlotte. We have looked for it this evening, and will continue the search. The most distinctive design element is the detailing at the cuff and hem.
We will also continue looking for Charlotte’s top and update the post when we have more information on any of the items. Many thanks to Susan Courter of What Meghan Wore for her assistance with the post.
It was a delight to see the new pictures, both Charlotte and Louis look just darling!

Charlotte wear inside
Hi again, Lucy, and thank you for the link. I am not convinced that is the blouse that Charlotte wore; that is why it isn’t in either post. 🙂
Thanks for a lovely post and all the sleuthing work, these Irulea pieces are beautifully made. It’s such a lovely treat to have these pics after having to adjust to a no-show on Charlotte’s birthday. I’m only sorry that the only reference to George is via a hand-me-down but I’m more than happy we got these pics at least!
I believe Charlotte’s top under the sweater is last seasons Chelsea top with the blue trim. They no longer carry that color trimming.
Hello, and thank you for commenting, what a great tip! It looks like Charlotte’s top may be in a printed fabric, as opposed to the solid white Chelsea tops. But I’m not always the best (by a long shot!) at judging these things, so I have emailed Amaia for her input. You’re lovely to help out with the ID efforts! 🙂
I have a feeling we will be seeing some of these pieces on a whole new set of newborns 25-30 years from now when William and Kate become grandparents!
Do you have any idea what the bed blanket is? With the red flower? I almost feel like Charlotte wore the same skirt/overalls for her school pics but in burgundy .
Wonderful article, as always. Thank you!
It seems to me that you need a new logo with three little crowns some time soon ?
Prince Louis’ outfit with Charlotte looks very similar to styles created by designer Granlei. Here’s something similar: http://www.littlecsboutique.co.uk/product/granlei-knitted-set
Hi, Claire, and thank you for the tip. The Granlei pieces do have very similar elements. I also thought Paz Rodriguez offered some items with design/construction like Louis’s suit, although not quite so much as the Granlei. (I do like what both brands offer, always so cute and classic.) 🙂
