Prince George has started nursery school at Westacre Montessori School.

Kensington Palace released two photographs on Twitter of the big day.
The pictures were taken by George’s mother, the Duchess of Cambridge. More from Richard Palmer’s story in The Express:
Onlookers said tight security surrounded the royal party when they arrive at the nursery, which is a 10-mile, 20-minute drive from the Cambridges’ 10-bedroom Georgian mansion, Anmer Hall, on the Queen’s Sandringham estate.
George is expected to attend two or three times per week initially at a cost of £5.50 per hour, cheaper than many London nurseries.

Mr. Palmer also noted that royal aides were “reluctant to say if there were any tears…but George had a good time on his first day.”
George is wearing a navy blue quilted/puffer jacket. The piece is trimmed in brown corduroy elbow patches, as well as at the pockets; it looks like the plaid/tartan lining is a soft bushed flannel.
It turn out George was wearing a piece from John Lewis, but it is no longer available.
Here is another look at the piece via eBay.
The jacket dates back at least two years, that is when a photo of it was posted on Pinterest, along with the khaki version of the piece. Mr. Palmer reports the jacket originally sold for £30, that’s roughly $44 at today’s exchange rates.
A Tip of the Tiara to the whizzes at Prince George Pieces, they discovered the jacket.
More on what might have been in George’s backpack/rucksack from The Daily Mail:
At Westacre, children are taught to take off their shoes as soon as they arrive. Wearing slippers helps keep the carpet mud-free – as well as making for fewer tears when the little ones inevitably stand on each other’s toes.
As George is not doing full days, he is unlikely to have brought a lunchbox. But every child is asked to bring a piece of fruit to school, as part of the Montessori healthy eating policy.
They are then asked to place these into a communal bowl, before choosing one they would like. This way they learn to share.
We continue the search for George’s backpack.

Could this be the mysterious backpack? I just ordered it in hot pink for my little Princess : )

George looks very much at his ease here, and quite casual with his loose curls and the soft jacket. I’m not a fan of waterproof quilting like this as I find it too bulky and unflattering. On small people however it has to be an essential having the major advantage of being wipe-clean practical!
This one also looks great with its elbow patches and cosy plaid lining, plus a handy hood. I’m impressed he can manage a backpack given how slippy the wipe-clean surface can be and the pale blue is an odd shade against all the rest. Definitely a dress-down first day to steady the nerves, though George looks like he’s quite the young man in charge here.
It’s lovely too that his Mum can take the pictures much like any Mum and they haven’t got the hassle of a full formal outing with parents on display as well. These shots are not as sharp as Kate’s earlier indoor ones but they show up the lively character of her firstborn very well.
